The 3 Calaveras

I created these 3 Calaveras as a series to show the evolution of the "Calavera" within the Mexican Tradition.

This calavera I call, "First Skull".  A hallmark of "modern" humans was the actual burial and ceremonies that followed the death of a loved one.  The body would be decorated and placed in a shallow grave, to be unearthed later and displayed as an honored Ancestor.

The second skull, "Aztec Warrior" .  This calavera shows all of the magical, mystical warrior marking on this skull face.  The Aztec civilization took the power of life/death to another level.

The final skull is the modern Sugar Calavera with bright colors and common motifs.  The modern era has turned the Calavera into more a caricature of death, rather than the powerful and revered original skulls of the Ancestors.

Viva la Vida - a Frida Calavera

This calavera represents Frida Kahlo's art and her life, how they intertwined.  Through her artwork she showed the world her pain, her vulnerability and her strength as well.  It is titled, "Viva la Vida", the title of Frida's last work of art.

Frida's Heart

Here is my latest work titled, "Frida's Heart".  This calavera depicts Frida Kahlo rising from her chair in order to offer her "heart" to someone.  This is an all hand-made papier mache calavera, it took about 3 weeks to make the entire scene.  She is on her way to the Corazon Gallery at Olvera Street for an art show.

Frida in Bed - a new calavera for 2014

Continuing my papier mache dia de los muertos journey for 2014.  Just finished this calavera scene, it's Frida Kahlo in her bed with her body cast and sugar skull.  This calavera is modeled after an actual picture of Frida in her home the Casa Azul.

the Soul's Night - new calavera for 2014

It is that time of the year again, what I start to create all kinds of Calavera scenes for the Dia de los Muertos season.

Here is the first of my creations:  the Soul's Night.

This scene of a Calavera praying was different for me.  I painted the background for the bones a royal deep blue,  I usually leave the background white, as in the traditional calavera style, but I have to create the vision I'm given.  This scene also contains tears, I've never added tears before and didn't know how in the world I was going to accomplish that, but I figured it out (whew!).

So here is the newest calavera in the Rosie Girl Art collection, hope you like it!

Skele-Faeries on Glee!

Two of my Skele-Faeries hit Glee last night on the "Trio" episode.  You can see the two Skele-Faeries really quickly on the wall behind Santana. So Happy!

Here's a video clip I took off the computer, sorry it's not clearer.

Here are some pictures too!

Paranormal at the Office Max!!

I went to my local Office Max today to get some paper.  As I was walking down the aisle I felt something hit the back of my leg....pretty hard.   I turned around thinking I hit a box or something.....I saw nothing.  Weird.

I kept walking down the aisle, half way now, and then again harder, BOOM!!, on my leg, Hard!

Then I started to freak out a bit, I thought, have I fallen down and don't know it yet??  What's happening?? I looked at my leg and again nothing was in the aisle.

Then for a split second I thought, maybe the Devil's finally reaching up from Hell to get me!

I took two more steps down the aisle....then I turned around super-fast and saw this!!

A tiny chihuahua was messing with me!!
As soon as I turned around and busted him, he spun and took off down the aisle.  I don't know where he came from, where he went, does he live in the Office Max??  Don't know, kinda afraid to go back.....
